EHR Integration Services

We start EHR integrations with the approval path, because the health system's review and the EHR vendor's program take longer than the code. EHR integration services connect digital health products, clinic systems, payer platforms, and data platforms to Epic, Oracle Health, Athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, and smaller EHRs over FHIR R4 and HL7 v2. SMART on FHIR covers apps that run in the clinician's EHR. Read access goes live first, after approval, and write-back (orders, scheduling, documents) follows in the vendor's program as a later release.

Healthcare Integration Services: Read Access First, Write-Back Certified Second

Plus8Soft provides healthcare integration services to digital health companies, provider groups, and payers. The work covers EHR integration over FHIR R4 and HL7 integration services for hospital message feeds. It also covers lab, pharmacy, and device connections, and FHIR-native backends that hold the data between your product and the EHRs. Pulling data out of a certified EHR has a known scope. Under ONC’s Cures Act rule, certified EHRs expose a standardized FHIR R4 read API. At HIMSS26 in March 2026, HHS reported more than 1,500 information-blocking complaints and reminded developers of certified EHRs that penalties run up to $1 million per violation. That is why read access is rarely refused, and the delay is the health system’s security review. Our other healthcare services are listed on the healthcare software development hub.

Four questions decide the timeline, and we answer them in the first weeks:

  • Which connection pattern. Launch inside the clinician’s EHR session, a patient-authorized connection, or event feeds from the hospital. The answer differs per EHR and per customer site.
  • Who approves, and when. The EHR vendor’s program and each health system’s security review, which run in parallel once the first site is named.
  • What reads first, and what writes later. Demographics, results, and notes arrive through the read API. Scheduling, orders, and documents go back through the vendor’s certification in a later release.
  • Where the data lives in between. A FHIR-native backend, so the next EHR or lab is one more adapter on the same platform.

Integration is usually one part of a larger build. See our healthcare app development services, telemedicine platform development, and patient portal development, and our healthcare data analytics services for bulk export and reporting-database access. The mechanics, vendor differences, and cost ranges are in our guide to EHR integration with HL7 v2 and FHIR R4.

Healthcare Integration Solutions We Build

Most projects start with one EHR connection and add a second EHR, a lab, or a payer later. The six types below are quoted separately.
01
EHR Integration for Digital Health Products
SMART on FHIR app development for Epic, Oracle Health, and Athenahealth, so your product launches inside the clinician's workflow with the patient already in context. Standalone FHIR clients with patient-authorized access for consumer apps.

02
HL7 Integration Services
HL7 v2 feeds for ADT (admissions, discharges, transfers), scheduling, orders, and results, routed through the hospital's interface engine (Mirth, Rhapsody, or similar) or a queue-based service of ours. When the feed comes through our queue-based service, a dropped connection raises an alert and messages replay once it is back.

03
FHIR-Native Backends and Data Hubs
FHIR integration services and healthcare data integration services built on a FHIR server: Aidbox, HAPI FHIR, Medplum, or the FHIR services from Google, Microsoft, and AWS. Connected systems read and write standard resources, and we add terminology, access control, and audit where the server does not include them. The next EHR or lab is one more adapter on the same platform.

04
Lab, Pharmacy, and Device Integrations
Lab orders and results with lab information systems, e-prescribing through a Surescripts-certified partner, pharmacy connections, and readings from connected devices. Each one lands in the EHR as structured data where the EHR accepts it.

Payer, Claims, and Revenue Cycle Integrations
Eligibility checks, claims and remittance over X12, prior authorization, and the FHIR APIs health plans are rolling out for payer-to-provider data exchange. Billing and revenue cycle systems that integrate with the EHR stay in sync, so claims go out without staff retyping encounter data.

Migration and Interoperability Modernization
Moving records between EHRs or into a new platform, mapping HL7 v2 and C-CDA documents to FHIR resources, and replacing point-to-point interfaces with one integration layer. An EHR upgrade or a new partner then touches one adapter, and the products behind it keep running.

What Our EHR Integration Services Include

Integration Discovery and Access Plan
One document before the code: which EHRs and versions, which data each screen needs, read or write for each item, and which vendor program applies. It names who at the health system approves, and it becomes the list of requests we file in week one.
Vendor Programs and Health System Approvals
Our healthcare interoperability services include the paperwork: registering the app in the vendor's developer program and working through each health system's review. The security questionnaires repeat the same topics, from PHI storage and encryption to access control, incident response, audit logs, and the BAA chain. The answers, architecture diagram, and data access list are drafted from our template before the questionnaire arrives.
Message Handling Through Interface Engines
We build the channels in Mirth Connect or Rhapsody when the hospital runs one, with message validation, acknowledgments, and error queues. Messages are logged from receipt to the record they updated.
Data Mapping to US Core
Codes mapped to LOINC, SNOMED CT, RxNorm, ICD-10-CM, and CPT. Resources shaped to US Core profiles, so data from different EHRs means the same thing in your product. Mapping tables are versioned and reviewed with your clinical lead.
Security, Consent, and Audit
OAuth 2.0 with SMART scopes and patient consent where patients authorize access. A business associate agreement with you, and with each vendor that stores or processes patient data, plus an access-controlled audit log of record reads and writes. PHI handling follows the HIPAA Security Rule safeguards the health system's questionnaire checks against, and patient identifiers stay out of application logs and product analytics tools.
Testing, Certification, and Go-Live
Vendor sandboxes first, then interface testing with the health system's own team. Then a cutover plan with the legacy path kept as fallback for as long as the hospital can run both. After go-live, monitoring and a runbook, so a vendor change arrives as a scheduled ticket.

EHR Integration Services FAQ

How much do EHR integration services cost with Plus8Soft?
Cost depends on the number of interfaces, whether each one reads or also writes, and how much terminology mapping the data needs. A read-only FHIR connection to one EHR is the smallest engagement. Each bidirectional interface adds vendor certification and testing on top of the code. Discovery produces a per-interface plan with a cost range, and our EHR integration guide covers typical cost ranges. Any EHR vendor program fees are paid to the vendor directly.
How long does an EHR integration take with Plus8Soft?
Read-only FHIR access can be live in weeks once the health system has approved the app. Bidirectional sync with scheduling and orders typically adds 2 to 4 months for vendor certification and testing. We register with the vendor in week one and open the security questionnaire as soon as the first health system is named.
How do you integrate with Epic and Oracle Health?
Through each vendor's developer program. For Epic, we register the app and build against the sandbox. FHIR R4 APIs read records and write back where Epic and the health system enable it, and SMART on FHIR launches the app inside the clinician's Epic session. Oracle Health (formerly Cerner) runs its own program with a sandbox and a separate review per health system. FHIR R4 read is standard there; write-back is narrower than Epic's and confirmed per site during discovery.
Do you use HL7 v2 or FHIR for EHR integration development services?
Both, chosen per interface. FHIR R4 covers what the certified APIs expose: demographics, problems, medications, results, documents, and SMART launch. HL7 v2 covers what hospitals still push as messages: ADT events, scheduling, orders, and results in near real time through an interface engine. Most products need FHIR for the app and HL7 v2 for the event feeds, and we normalize both into one FHIR data model.
Which FHIR server do you build on?
The one that fits the deployment. Aidbox fits a product that needs a full FHIR platform with terminology and SMART support included. HAPI FHIR fits a client who wants a plain open-source Java server. Medplum fits a team that wants a developer-first stack with a UI layer. The cloud FHIR services from Google, Microsoft, and AWS fit a product whose data already lives in that cloud. We have worked with each and recommend one after discovery.
How do you handle HIPAA, vendor approvals, and health system security reviews?
We draft the registration and review materials from our template, and several health systems review the same set at the same time. Where the health system requires a penetration test, we add one against your product to the plan. We sign a business associate agreement with you and supply the vendor BAA list the health system asks for. Requests are tracked as project milestones.
Can you add an EHR connection to a product we already have?
Yes. We add the connection to your existing stack through an adapter, after an assessment of how the product stores clinical data and which interfaces it already has. A FHIR-native layer is proposed only when the assessment shows several interfaces to maintain, and point-to-point interfaces then move onto it one at a time.
What do you do after go-live?
EHR upgrades, feed changes, and retired API versions change interface behavior after go-live. We monitor message flow and API errors, keep the runbook current, and handle vendor upgrade notices as scheduled work. Maintenance is scoped separately.
